This airplane is a piece of aviation history. When was the last time that you saw an aircraft that was 70 years old flying through the skies? Let alone, dreamed of owning one. When was the last time you heard a 165 horsepower Warner Super Scarab radial engine let alone felt one pulling you through the air? This is an amazingly well kept and well traveled airplane.
Just to look at her makes a person think of a bygone era. One where our fathers and their fathers ventured out into the open air with only rudimentary, short range RDF equipment and the stars to guide their way. A time when many of those pilots still wore leather flight helmets and goggles.
N16899 is one of less than 50 of her kind left in the world. The B-17s' sported those numbers once, to say
the least. Now, they are down to 14. This airplane is part of a diminishing
breed of aircraft. This may be your last chance to own such an excellent
example of aviation engineering.
The owner and his wife purchased this aircraft back in 1989. They got it in boxes and proceeded to take it down to bare metal and rebuild it from scratch. To look at the various aspects of this aircraft, the attention to detail is noteworthy.
The interior is in great shape. It is evident that this was a labor of love. The exterior skin is intact with only very minor flaws. New Fairchild insignia have been ordered for the vertical stabilizer. The radial engine has been immaculately detailed. It shows no oil leaks what so ever. For those of you who know radial engines, this is a rarity. In all, this is a beautiful aircraft.
Don't miss out.
